Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Southampton: prediction, preview & team news

Southampton can continue their fine form and condemn Wolves to a second consecutive Premier League when they travel to Molineux on Monday night.

The hosts come into the game after a 1-0 defeat away to Leicester City last time out.

The Saints are one of the form teams in the division and in great form, having taken 16 points in their last six Premier League games, just two behind league leaders Leicester.

The Saints, for a few hours, went top of the Premier League after beating Newcastle United 2-0 in their last game before the international break, but have since been overtaken by a few teams.

Wolverhampton Wanderers aren’t having a particularly bad run either. Prior to the 1-0 loss to Leicester City in their last game before the break, Wolves had picked up 10 points from four Premier League games.

After starting the season with three consecutive defeats in all competitions, Hassenhutl’s side have won five and drawn one of their subsequent Premier League matches and are fourth, having briefly topped the table after their victory over Newcastle United in that run.

Wolves come into the game off a disheartening 1-0 defeat by Leicester at the King Power Stadium, and we can see the Saints coming away with the three points, especially with no crowd at Molineux which will ease the pressure on the visitors.

Reason for Wolverhampton vs Southampton predictions:

  • Southampton have scored in 20 of their last 22 away league games.
  • Wolves conceded to all but one of the top 11 Premier League sides last season.
  • The hosts have found the net in 22 of their last 25 home Premier League matches.
  • The last three clashes between these two have seen BTTS land.
  • Wolves have lost just one of the past eight league meetings, winning four and drawing three.
  • Southampton are one short of 100 league goals against Wolves.

Southampton come into this clash with a brilliant run of form behind them.

The Saints have won five of their last six games, making them a force that Wolves will struggle to cope with.

The visitors come into this clash having found the net in 20 of their last 22 Premier League away trips. Saints have been beaten just once in their last nine on the road in the league. They come into this clash unbeaten in their last three away trips, scoring eight times in that run.

Last season Wolves won just one of their clashes with sides in the top 11. Wolves managed just one clean sheet in those 10 games, which should worry them in this meeting with free-scoring Saints.

Southampton have won 27 of 67 previous games against Wolves, losing only 23. These two sides have played out 17 draws against each other.

In the last game between these two sides, which was played at St. Mary’s, Wolves produced a stirring second-half comeback to win 3-2.

Each of the last three meetings between these two sides have seen both teams score and we see this clash going the same way.

This will be a close game between two sides who are both in a decent run of form. Southampton will miss Ings, especially in the face of Wolves having their hitman Raul Jimenez back in action.

Wolves are well equipped at playing on the break, and we feel that the home side will do enough to earn a point on home territory. We believe that the Saints have enough in their arsenal to hold Wolves to a draw.

Our Prediction: Draw 1-1 @ 11/2
