After the international break, the Premier League is back this weekend as Chelsea travel to St. James’ Park for a showdown with Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United.
Chelsea have the chance to temporarily move top of the Premier League table when they take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday lunchtime.
A victory for Chelsea can see Frank Lampard’s side go top of the table – though most likely only for a short time. Frank Lampard’s side would jump from fifth to first with victory in the opening match of gameweek nine, but they have struggled at this venue in recent seasons.
Newcastle, meanwhile, can move as high as seventh with a win in this Premier League clash.
Chelsea have won five of their last seven Premier League meetings with Newcastle, but have only won one of their last seven top-flight trips to St James’ Park – losing five times in that spell, including a last-gasp defeat in the corresponding fixture in 2019-20.
Chelsea are now unbeaten in six Premier League games and eight across all competitions, all the while tightening things up at the back and increasing their attacking threat at the other end of the pitch.
Newcastle have won four, drawn four and lost four of their last 12 Premier League games, although two victories from their last three is as many as they had managed in their previous 11 at St James’ Park.
Reason for Newcastle vs Chelsea predictions:
- Newcastle have scored in five of their last six encounters with Chelsea.
- Chelsea were unbeaten in eight games before the international break.
- Chelsea have notched three or more goals in six of their eight Premier League fixtures this term.
- Timo Werner bagged seven goals in his last seven appearances for the Blues.
- Chelsea are unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions, six of them in the Premier League.
Chelsea are currently in the midst of one of their strongest runs under Frank Lampard. They’ve lost just once in their opening eight league matches, suffering defeat at the hands of reigning Premier League champions Liverpool.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have seen mixed results throughout the campaign. They’ve scored just 10 goals this season.
Chelsea defeated Newcastle in October at Stamford Bridge, while the Magpies picked up their own 1-0 win at St. James’ Park in January.
Newcastle will look to use their regular gameplan in this match – sit deep, look to spoil and stifle, and hit Chelsea on the break using the pace of Saint-Maximin and Wilson’s sublime finishing. However, they might find this tricky against their London-based opponents.
Chelsea’s defence has improved dramatically of late, and their attacking prowess is amongst the best in the Premier League.
