Liverpool vs Chelsea: prediction, preview, team news / Premier League 2021-22

The Premier League features a high-profile fixture this weekend as Liverpool lock horns with Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday after both sides have started the new season with a 100 per cent record. The two English giants are yet to drop points in the Premier League and will be intent on maintaining their perfect record this weekend.

Liverpool were not at their best last season and struggled to cope with a spate of injuries over the course of their Premier League campaign.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have shown tremendous improvement under Thomas Tuchel and are potential title contenders this season.

The reigning European champions eased past arch-rivals Arsenal in their previous game and will want a similar result against Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side saw off Burnley 2-0 in gameweek two, while Chelsea eased to victory at Arsenal by the same scoreline.

Liverpool vs Chelsea predictions:

  • Chelsea have only lost three Premier League games since Thomas Tuchel was appointed.
  • Chelsea have won six of their eight meetings with the ‘Big Six’ since Tuchel arrived.
  • Liverpool have only won four of their last 13 Premier League home games.
  • Wing-backs have scored in four of Chelsea’s last six league games, with Marcos Alonso scoring twice.

Liverpool have a good historical record against Chelsea and have won 82 matches out of 188 games played between the two sides. Chelsea have managed 65 victories against Liverpool and will want to be at their best this weekend.

The previous meeting between the two Premier League behemoths took place in March this year and ended in a 1-0 victory for Chelsea.

It has been 11 years since Chelsea last opened a Premier League campaign with three wins and three clean sheets on the trot, but having restricted Arsenal and Crystal Palace to a combined 10 shots earlier this month, Tuchel’s resolute defence will aim to replicate such performances against one of the most famed attacks the country has to offer.

Liverpool have cantered to victories against both Norwich and Burnley and, despite their relatively easy fixtures at the start of the term, you get the feeling Jurgen Klopp’s side are back to their best after a difficult season last year.

As far as the overall result goes, it’s hard to choose between these two in-form sides. Chelsea have only lost three league games since Tuchel’s arrival in January and they have won six of their eight meetings including at Anfield in March.

Chelsea have made massive strides in recent months and are one of the favourites to win the Premier League this season. The Blues’ new signing Romelu Lukaku found the back of the net against Arsenal last weekend and will be a massive threat in the final third.

Liverpool have been bolstered by the return of several of their key players this season and will be intent on reclaiming their league crown this season. Both teams are evenly matched on paper and could play out a draw this weekend.
