Tottenham vs Liverpool: prediction, preview and team news

Tottenham host Liverpool on Thursday, with the Reds looking to bounce back from a few disappointing results which have seen Jurgen Klopp’s side slip to fifth in the Premier League table.

The two English powerhouses were neck-and-neck at the top of the table during the early stages of the campaign, but dismal spells of form have seen Spurs slip to fifth while Liverpool only just remain in the top four.

Liverpool were title favourites earlier in the season, but have gone through a rough patch since the turn of the year. The Reds have lost their last two games, including a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham side also looked like contenders in the title race earlier in the season, but have since faltered.

Spurs are one point behind Liverpool in sixth with a game in hand over the Reds. Tottenham have seen an uptick in their form recently, going unbeaten in eight games across all competitions.

Reason for Tottenham vs Liverpool predictions:

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in eight games in all competitions.
  • Spurs have 33 points after 18 league matches, four more than at the halfway stage of last season.
  • Liverpool have recorded just one win in their last seven matches.
  • Liverpool have won only one of their last eight Premier League away fixtures.
  • They are in danger of losing consecutive Premier League fixtures for the first time since 2015 under Brendan Rodgers.
  • Liverpool have scored one or fewer goals in five of their last six away assignments in the league.

Thursday’s game represents the 177th meeting between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions, with the Reds boasting 86 wins compared to Tottenham’s 48.

The Reds are unbeaten against Tottenham in the last three seasons, including a 2-0 win the Champions League final in 2019.

Liverpool are on a run of six successive victories against Tottenham in all competitions and have lost only once in the past 18 meetings.

They could win six consecutive top-flight matches against Spurs for the first time.

This is the first time Tottenham and Liverpool have met on a Thursday in the top flight. Liverpool have beaten Spurs on every other day of the week.

Liverpool have won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two sides, with their only loss coming back in 2017.

Liverpool really need a win on Thursday and the Reds will be looking for a quick start to the game.

It remains to be seen whether Mourinho will deploy a gung-ho approach or sit back and hope to attack Liverpool on the counter, although that could prove costly against a Reds side desperate to break their goalscoring duck. Spurs have undoubtedly improved in recent weeks, but for 85 minutes against Wycombe, their ongoing problems were evident.

We expect Klopp’s men to finally make the net ripple in the league, but these two sides can barely be separated in the table and we expect that to be reflected on Thursday with a closely-fought draw.

Our Prediction: Draw @ 3.74
