Everton vs Manchester United: prediction, preview and team news

Everton can extend their good run of form to the Carabao Cup as they host a Manchester United side full of confidence in what is looking like the tie of the quarter-final stage.

Both sides have been playing well in the Premier League of late, with the Toffees having recovered from a slump to climb back up to fourth, while United have risen to third on the back of a run of six wins and a draw in seven games, sparking whispers of a potential title challenge.

Two of the Premier League’s form teams do battle in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, with a semi-final spot up for grabs when Everton welcome Manchester United to Goodison Park.

Manchester United have been a resurgent force over the past few weeks and will be confident ahead of this fixture.

Everton have had their fair share of problems this season but have managed to win their last three games. The Toffees have already defeated London giants Chelsea and Arsenal this month and will want to make another statement in their impressive campaign under Carlo Ancelotti.

Manchester United have also found their feet in recent weeks and fired a warning to the rest of the Premier League with a stunning 6-2 victory against Leeds United over the weekend. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made progress with the team that he has assembled and will want to win this game.

Reason for Everton vs Manchester United predictions:

  • Everton have won each of their last three games against Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal.
  • Man Utd are expected to rotate their team for the trip to Goodison Park.
  • Everton notched exactly two goals in each of their last two victories.
  • Everton are the top-scoring team in this season’s competition, with 12 goals.
  • United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won all six of his away matches in the competition, including two while in charge of Cardiff City.
  • The last League Cup meeting between Everton and Manchester United was back in November 1993 in the fourth round, with the Red Devils winning 2-0 at Goodison Park.

Manchester United are looking to win consecutive away matches against Everton for the first time since September 2007, while the Red Devils have only beaten the Toffees away from home twice in one season once before – in 1993-94 (in the league and the League Cup).

The Red Devils are also only the third team in Premier League history to win their opening six away games of a season, and the first team since 1960 to score at least twice in 10 consecutive away league games.

Everton have reached the League Cup quarter-finals in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1987-88. They lost to Leicester City on penalties after a 2-2 draw with at this stage last term.

Since the start of 2017-18, only Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin (10) has scored more EFL Cup goals than Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford (seven).

Manchester United have a good record against Everton and have won 89 games out of a total of 204 matches played between the two times. Everton have troubled the Red Devils on several occasions in the past and have managed 70 victories against the Premier League giants.

The previous meeting between the two sides took place in the Premier League last month and ended in an emphatic 3-1 victory for Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes was virtually unplayable on the day and will want to make his mark on the day.

This is a difficult match to call between two in-form teams who are likely to make changes to their starting XI, and both will go into this match fully confident that they can progress to the semi-finals.

Manchester United have hit back at their sceptics over the past few weeks but have plenty of work to do ahead of this game. Carlo Ancelotti is a seasoned expert when it comes to high-profile games and Everton have an array of talented players in their ranks.

Bruno Fernandes has been the driving force behind Manchester United’s success so far this season and will be key to the outcome of this game. The Red Devils have stepped up to the plate this season and hold a slight upper hand going into this match.
