England vs Iceland: predictions and tips

England can restore some pride after their Nations League disappointment with victory against Iceland at Wembley on Wednesday.

The hosts cannot qualify for the finals and Iceland’s relegation is already confirmed, so there is only pride on the line for both teams in midweek.

The Three Lions were defeated 2-0 by Belgium to end their hopes of qualifying for the finals, leaving Denmark and the Red Devils to fight it out for a place in the finals.

Iceland are bottom of Group A2 with no points, and England will be hoping to produce a better performance than they did during the drab 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture in September.

Iceland have lost their last four games in a row in all competitions, and while they only suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to England in Reykjavik, it doesn’t look like that losing run will end on Wednesday.

Reason for England vs Iceland predictions:

  • Iceland have lost all nine of their UEFA Nations League matches.
  • England have conceded in three of their last four matches.
  • Iceland have scored in five of their last six games, losing 2-1 in each of their last three games.

England’s third-placed finish in the Nations League is already guaranteed, with Denmark boasting a better head-to-head record, and Southgate will no doubt spend the next few months pondering how he can get the best out of England’s highly-rated youngsters before the European Championships.

Meanwhile, Iceland’s Nations League campaign has gone widely as expected for the Nordic nation – five games, five losses, three goals scored and 13 conceded.

Iceland aren’t expected to put up much of a fight on Wednesday either. They have moved up in the world rankings in recent years, but they have lost all nine of their UEFA Nations League matches and head into this game having lost six of their last seven in all competitions.

In fact, Iceland have found the net in five of their last six games and should be able to trouble an England defence that have only kept one clean sheet in their last four. However, with so many defeats under their belt England are still likely to emerge triumphant and a bet of England to win and both teams to score looks excellent value.

Each of Iceland’s last three games have ended in 2-1 defeats as well while England have scored two or more goals in three of their last five matches.

Our Prediction: England 2-1 @ 9/1
