Arsenal vs Manchester United: Prediction & Match Preview

One of the defining rivalries of the Premier League era enters its latest chapter on Saturday afternoon when Arsenal welcome Manchester United to the Emirates Stadium.

Both sides have been the league’s in-form teams in recent weeks and will be looking to continue their good form when they meet at the Emirates on Saturday.

Seven places and 10 points separate the two sides in the table, but it is ninth-placed Arsenal who go into the game off the back of a victory while second-placed Manchester United were left reeling by defeat to Sheffield United last time out.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope that loss was just a temporary lapse in form as his team continue putting pressure on Manchester City at the top of the table.

Mikel Arteta’s side are on a great run of form, which has seen them pick up 16 of the 18 Premier League points available since Boxing Day.

The Gunners go into the fixture knowing that they are capable of beating Manchester United, having already triumphed in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

Reason for Arsenal vs Manchester United predictions:

  • Arsenal have scored in seven of their last eight Premier League games.
  • The Gunners have scored 14 goals in those matches, two more than in their opening 14 fixtures.
  • Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 17 league away games and have scored in 16 of those.
  • They have come from behind to win seven Premier League matches this season – all of them away.
  • The Red Devils have only kept two clean sheets in ten top flight away days this season.
  • Alexandre Lacazette has scored five goals in his last six Premier League appearances, drawing the other.
  • Arsenal are undefeated in the past four Premier League meetings, winning three, drawing one and keeping three clean sheets.

United could lose three consecutive top-flight away games against the Gunners for the first time since 1991.

The last five meetings between the two teams makes for good reading if you’re an Arsenal fan. The Gunners have not lost in the Premier League against Manchester United since April 2018. The North Londoners have won three of their last five games against the Red Devils, drawing the other two.

Manchester United have not won a league game against Arsenal since April 2018, including all four meetings under Solskjaer, who is the only Man United manager to have faced the Gunners more than once in the top flight without winning.

Three of those four meetings have ended in defeat, including each of the last two and another Arsenal victory on Saturday would see them make it three on the bounce for the first time since September 1998.

Arsenal could also record three consecutive home league wins over their old rivals for the first time since May 1991, having won the corresponding fixture last season 2-0.

At home, Arsenal have kept three clean sheets in a row – as many as they had managed in their previous 19 games at the Emirates – and Saturday offers them the opportunity to extend that to four on the bounce for the first time since April 2019 – a run which, included victory over Manchester United.

Man United’s defeat to Sheffield United makes this contest even more difficult to call, on the one hand Solskjaer will expect a response from his side, but on the other it was exactly the type of result which caused some to exercise caution over declaring them genuine title contenders.

We could learn a lot about United’s true credentials in this match against an in-form Arsenal side which will be full of confidence as they attempt to rectify their appalling start to the season.

Arsenal have been in great form of late, but Manchester United have been playing like title contenders.

All signs point to a high-scoring draw.
