AC Milan vs Bologna: prediction, preview and team news

AC Milan get their 2020-21 Serie A campaign underway with a visit from Bologna on Monday.

The 18-time Italian champions have been enduring a difficult few seasons, finishing outside Serie A’s top four in each of the last seven years. Since coming second to Juventus in 2012, they’ve fallen as low as 10th with last season’s campaign seeing them end in sixth, a familiar spot for the Milanese giants.

Stefano Pioli’s side finished sixth in Italy’s top flight last season to secure a spot in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League, while Bologna ended the campaign in 12th position in the table.

AC Milan have improved by leaps and bounds over the past few months and will have the upper hand in this game.

Reason for AC Milan vs. Bologna predictions:

  • Only Atalanta (47 points and 55 goals) have picked up more points and netted more goals than AC Milan (45 points and 47 goals) in Serie A in 2020.
  • Bologna have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 33 games in Serie A – the longest such run in the competition’s history.
  • AC Milan are currently unbeaten in their last 12 games in Serie A.
  • AC Milan have won eight of their last nine Serie A matches against Bologna.

AC Milan predictably have a superior head-to-head record in this game and have won 15 games out of a total of 22 matches played between the two sides.

Bologna, meanwhile, finished 12th in Italy’s top flight last season, winning 12, drawing 11 and losing 15 of their 38 matches to claim 47 points, 12 points clear of the relegation zone.

Bologna have managed only two victories against the Rossoneri and will have to dig deep into their squad to improve their record on Monday.

AC Milan finished last season in excellent form and they’ll be hoping to pick up where they left off when Bologna visit San Siro on Monday night.

Milan scored 35 goals in those 12 games, including a 5-1 victory over Bologna. That’s not ideal ahead of a clash with a Bologna side who like to get forward.

AC Milan will most probably have the majority of the possession and should be able to turn a few of their chances into goals. At the same time, Bologna could well find it tough getting on the scoresheet but do we see them getting the chances to score, too.

Prediction: Over 2.5/3 @ 1.781
