Spain vs. Argentina: prediction and team news / Olympic Games 2020

Pre-tournament favourites Spain have underwhelmed so far at the 2020 Olympics, and Argentina will provide them with their biggest test yet in Japan.

Spain are aiming to secure top spot in Group C at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, when they finish the group stage fixtures against Argentina on Wednesday.

Both sides have only managed to score once in their first two games but Spain have one more point than Argentina, who currently sit third behind Australia on goal difference.

La Rojita were held to a 0-0 draw in their opener against Egypt and then secured a narrow 1-0 win over Australia.

Argentina have also found goals hard to come by after losing their opener 2-0 to the Olyroos before edging out Egypt 1-0.

Spain vs Argentina predictions:

  • Spain are yet to concede in Japan, but have scored just once themselves.
  • There have been under 2.5 goals in total in three of Argentina’s last four games.
  • Spain have scored two goals in three games in 2021.
  • In the last ten matches, Argentina lost only two, while Spain lost four matches out of the last ten they played.

The last time Argentina U23 and Spain U23 played against each other the match ended with four goals scored.

In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, both Argentina and Spain played games with under 2.5 total goals scored, so the game against each other will most likely end the same way.

Spain is leading the Group C table with one win and one draw, while their opponents Argentina have one win and one loss.

The Tokyo Games is only Spain’s second appearance at the Olympics since 2000, most recently they were eliminated at the group stages at London 2012, but the nation has previously won this competition at home in 1992.

Argentina need a win, otherwise they are relying on results elsewhere, but getting any joy out of a Spain team who have kept two clean sheets so far looks a tall order for the young Albiceleste, who have just one goal themselves. Spain have the better attack on paper.

Our prediction: Spain win @ 1.95
